With the 2026 Fishing Season in full swing at Dhipirri, one of our new guides – Ryan Gwynne from Mossman, QLD – pulled in the biggest Dhipirri Barra ever caught at the Lodge (since we opened in 2013) on Thursday 9 April, with this magnificent Barramundi coming in at 119cm.
Sneaking off for a fish on a rare day off during the run-off, Gwynne and fellow new Dhipirri Guide Charlie Boyes, were fishing in The Glyde when this monster whacked a 5 inch prawn soft plastic and sent the two guides into a frenzy!
“It is one of the fattest Barramundi either Charlie or I have ever seen over our years of Barra fishing in Northern Queensland,” Gwynne said.
“They do say elephants eat peanuts, and this was certainly the case with this amazing Barra. I was using a Zman 5 inch prawnz elite and I am super stoked to bring in this big girl.”
“Once it came in, there was a lot of screaming on the boat with Charlie.”
Gwynne and Boyes joined Dhipirri’s guiding team under owner Darren Nickolls in March and have both been blown away with the systems they are guiding in the Northern Territory, after years fishing and guiding in Northern Queensland.
“I’ve never seen a creek system with the sheer numbers of fish and wildlife like it. Dhipirri is truly a special place.”
This is Gwynne’s 2nd Metrey since he arrived (he got a 108 in early March) – not bad for very few days off between guiding our clients during the run-off, with plenty of rain still falling and the top of The Glyde especially is teaming with water and life.
Gwynne also put Brian Withers on a 114cm in March – and he might have been even more stoked than Brian 🙂
Boyes also got into the act the day after Gwynne’s 119 – with a 104cm to join Dhipirri’s Metre Club himself.
“After being relegated to net duty for both of Ryan’s Metreys, I had to sneak out and leave him behind at the Lodge.” Boyes said.
“Rob Robinson, who has been a guide at Dhipirri for a while and has helped show Ryan and I around, and I went out to The Glyde so I could jag one myself. With Robbo on the net, I was pretty happy to get into Dhipirri’s Metre Club with a 104.”
Congrats gents!
